A FUN CELEBRATION Q&A

Happy Friday guys!

I'm taking the day off today, since it's my Birthday this weekend. Sasha took off from work so we could enjoy a longer celebratory weekend and I'm very excited to find out what's planned!

Since next week (May 1st) also marks The Hungarian Brunette's 3 months anniversary, I thought it would be fun to celebrate with a little celebration Q&A!

I compiled a list of questions that I get asked a lot, mostly on Instagram and I hope you guys will enjoy the answers! The questions are in no particular order, so bear with me here!

Without further ado, let's get started, shall we?

Do you have pets?

If being a dog-step-mom counts, then yes. Sasha’s chihuahua, Bentley, now feels like my own. It’s funny because I’ve never been a small dog person. I grew up with golden retrievers, and I always thought all small dogs did was bark and bite… But this one is SO sweet, you wouldn’t believe he’s a chihuahua. I also love that he looks like a rat and a bat had an offspring.

What’s your favourite drink?

This is so hard, I can’t even choose one. I would say it’s circumstantial.

On a weeknight, I love to have a glass of wine while I cook. In the winter, I go for reds, usually around 14%, dry. In the summer, I love a good sauvignon blanc.

For day-drinking, I’m all about a good rosé, year-round.

I also love having cocktails that match my surrounding and vibe. AKA, if I’m at a Mexican restaurant binging on chips and guac, you bet I won’t be drinking anything but a great marg.

Also, this is SUPER ratchet, but if I’m out at a bar or a club, you’ll see me drinking vodka-redbull, even though it’s super bad for you… I used to work at a gay bar in Montreal when I was in fashion school, and that’s what I drank every night. I swear, years later, just the smell of a redbull brings up the smell from that bar’s basement. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times - ha!

But over all these, I’ll never say no to champagne.

Are you a morning or an evening person?

When I was a kid, I used to wake-up at 6am every day. I honestly don’t know how my parents didn’t kill me… It must have been so annoying. I was like that until quite recently, actually. Now I like working late in the evening, because I feel like this is when I have the most inspiration going, creativity-wise. So it’s a toss-up. I’d say I love waking-up early if I need to be super productive, and having an all-nighter if I need to be creative.

What’s your morning routine?

I don’t have anything crazy going on in the morning. Unless I have an early shoot, I’ll just wake-up around 8, turn on the Nespresso machine on my way to the bathroom, brush my teeth, have coffee while I reply to comments and messages on Instagram, emails, etc. Then I take the dog on a walk, and try to squeeze in an hour of work before having breakfast. I’m usually not hungry right when I wake-up, so this works best for me. Breakfast is a smoothie bowl 90% of the time.

Where did you learn how to cook?

It’s funny how a lot of people ask me that, because I never really “learned” how to cook. I have no technical skills, really, and it’s extremely rare that I make a recipe with precise quantities. Usually, I just throw in a bunch of things that I feel would taste good together and call it a day. I love making meals on the fly, and I find that they’re usually better than when I try to stick to a recipe. If you want to know more about my cooking habits/my tips for beginners who want to start cooking, it's all in here.

I do LOVE to cook, though, and some of my greatest childhood memories are cooking-related. The smell of my dad’s spaghetti sauce every Sunday, my mom making Hungarian foods... I kind of learned how to cook from watching my parents and cooking shows. Seriously, I hate watching TV, but the one thing I'll watch on Netflix is a good cooking show like Chef's Table or Ugly Delicious. There's something about turning food into art and a full-on passion that truly resonates with me.

Cooking for people is one of the ways I express my love and care, which is why I make dinner for Sasha every night.

Do you speak Hungarian?

Yes. Hungarian is my first language, although I don't get to practice it as much as I would love to.

Did you go to college and what did you study?

I did go to college, and I studied fashion design and fashion marketing.

What’s your favourite music?

Once again, this is very circumstantial to me.. The only styles I don't really listen to are pop and country music. Although I can sing every Shania Twain song almost perfectly (thanks, dad!).

I tend to associate specific songs to specific moments A LOT, which means I would love to listen to Bruce Springsteen while driving in the Utah canyons... And that I can't possibly cook Italian food without listening to Frank Sinatra.

What would you do if you weren’t blogging?

When I was younger, I wanted to be a vet, just because I'm crazy about animals. Then, I thought I would be a lawyer, because of my big mouth and my insane memory. But if we're being more realistic, I would probably be doing anything creative. As I mentioned above, I studied fashion design + marketing, so I would probably have a clothing line or be a social media manager for a fashion label.

Who inspired you to start a blog and what blogs do you read regularly?

This is actually a hard one for me... I can't think of anyone specific who I really looked up to in the blogging industry, and honestly, I tend to just do things my own way and really stay in my own lane when it comes to the important things in my life... It's not like me to see someone and think "Oh, I want to do the same thing". I'm not saying I don't admire a lot of people, I do have a really long list of people I look up to, but I still don't try to model my own life after their achievements... If that makes sense.

When I was younger, I remember making fake magazines with full-on articles and pictures. Considering that magazines are a bit the ancestors of blogs, I guess you could say I was always a blogger? Ha!

I will say, though, that I remember being younger and discovering blogs like 5 inch & up and Cupcakes & Cashmere. This is probably when I realized that blogging was actually a possibility.

I had a blog when I was in fashion school, and I stopped doing it when I got a full-time job. But I really missed having a creative outlet and just editing my own space, and that's when I started thinking about The Hungarian Brunette. When Sasha had the opportunity to travel for work, I knew this was gonna be my shot to give it a real try.

As of now, I don't really read other blogs regularly, because I don't want to get influenced or feel like I'm emulating someone else. But I do read my real-life or insta-girlfriend's blogs here and there, because I love to give my attention to the people I actually care about!

Who’s your celebrity crush?

I'm gonna be super boring and say no one at the moment. I'm not even kidding when I say I have no interest in any man but my man (and no, he's not forcing me to type this, lol). But anyone who's known me between the age of 14 and 18 knows that I had a huge, HUGE crush on Daniel Radcliffe (yes, that's Harry Potter). I think every bedroom I inhabited during that period was covered from floor to ceiling with pictures of him.

What is the best place you travelled to?

I've travelled quite a bit, but my favourite destination will always be Hungary. This is where my entire family lives and it's the one place that really feels like home. I think if I travelled to any European country without stopping by my grandparents' house for at least 2 weeks, my grandmother would kill me...

Sentimental reasons aside, Mexico is pretty high up on my list. There's just something about tropical weather (and tequila) that just agrees with me.

Is there on place you haven't travelled to that you'd love to visit?

Yes! There's actually quite a few. I would love to go to Asia, in countries like India and Japan. Bali also really attracts me. I've already been to a lot of European countries, but never to Italy and Greece - I'd love to visit both. Lastly, I've been wanting to go to Morocco and Egypt for years.

Do you have siblings?

Yes, I have a baby sister that's 8 years younger than me. We're very close and I miss her everyday I'm not in Montreal.

What do you like most about yourself?

Probably that I'm so fucking stubborn. Yes, it does have downsides. But it also means that no matter what happens to me, I always find a way to get over it and be stronger than before, because I just can't bring myself to give up and give power to the people that have hurt me.

I do have moments that still get me down, like anyone else, because I try to stay human. But in the long run, I always end up brushing off the negative events/people in my life and just stick to my goals and plan.

It can come across as cold to a lot of people, but it's actually the best way I found to protect myself, because I'm actually such a sensitive soul that if I wasn't like that, I'd never get anything done.

What’s your workout routine?

It would be really embarrassing to call anything I do a workout routine. I have really bad knees, which means that most intensive physical activity hurt like shit. I'm lucky to have a fast metabolism, otherwise I don't know what I would do.

I still find ways to work around it, and I walk from 30 minutes to an hour a day, so that definitely helps. Also, every other day, I do 5 minutes of intense abs exercises, and I find that's all it takes for me. I also don't want a full-on six-pack, so obviously I do what I need to get the results I want.

I'll have a full post coming soon on working out for girls who don't like to workout (like me). Spoiler alert, it includes little daily-life tweaks and swimming.

Phew, am I right? That was a lot, but I really enjoyed doing this! I hope you guys enjoyed reading this Q&A too and feel free to keep sending fun questions my way! You can either leave them under any post of hit me up on Instagram, per usual! Connecting with all of you is really cool and I feel like this is such a fun way to open-up a little more and let you guys in.

I also wanna take this occasion to thank every single one of you guys. THB would be nothing without your love, support and engagement. Thank you for sticking with me and sharing my work with your friends. Thank you for letting me know what you want to see and inspiring me new content every day. It's really all about you. And thank you for the kind words, for laughing at my unfunny jokes and for watching my squirrel-feeding videos on Instagram. The squirrels really appreciate it. I know it might sound a little cliché, but I can't find all the right words to let you guys know how appreciative and grateful I am to all of you, just for being there.

So much love, Jenny xx
